What Your Swing Tempo Numbers Mean

Even longtime users of Tour Tempo can sometimes get thrown off by "the numbers," so here's an easy-to-follow refresher:

For the full swing, we label our tempos as:

18/6

21/7

24/8

27/9

30/10

These numbers refer to the duration of the backswing / downswing measured in "video frames per second."

Let's use 21/7 as an example:

This means 21 frames of video for the backswing...

And 7 frames of video for the downswing.

Total frames = 28.

Since the default (and our recommended) smartphone video recording speed is 30 frames-per-second...

28 frames is slightly less (faster) than one second.

Now, let's look at the 30/10 tempo.

This means 30 frames on the backswing...

Plus 10 frames on the downswing.

So, 40 total frames.

Again, because 30 frames = 1 second...

40 frames is slightly more (slower) than one second.

Now, here's the key thing we discovered by analyzing the swings of hundreds of Tour pros:

Regardless of how fast (or slow) they swing, their highly effective, powerful and consistent swings have one thing in common:

The RATIO of their backswings to their downswings is nearly always 3:1.

And when we had amateur golfers use this 3:1 ratio, the immediate improvement blew us away (it was the reason we created Tour Tempo!).

That's why our full-swing Tour Tempo tones follow this same 3:1 ratio:

18/6 = 3/1

21/7 = 3/1

24/8 = 3/1

27/9 = 3/1

30/10 = 3/1

Again, whether you have a faster swing or a slower swing...

You'll have a more EFFECTIVE swing if you maintain a 3:1 backswing-to-downswing ratio.

With that said, if you're super slow (1.5 seconds or more from takeaway to impact)...

I guarantee you will gain 5-10 mph of speed and 20+ yards of carry on your driver IF you get your ratio more dialed to 3:1 AND you get your elapsed time to 1.2 seconds (27/9) or less.

If you want to know your current tempo, the Tour Tempo app comes with an awesome "Frame Counter" feature that will measure it for you.

You simply record your swing and "mark" it at start, top and impact.
