The Formula for 30 More Yards

This video is a recap of how I helped a D1 college golfer gain 30 yards of carry in one training session using my Speed/Distance Progression.

The star of the show is Jillian, who plays for KU.

She hits the ball very straight and came to me wanting to pick up some extra speed and distance.

So, after identifying some movement patterns that could be improved…

We worked on some band exercises, some of my RECODE moves, and with a few of my training aids, including the Drag-N-Fly, which increases grip and ground forces and provides safe resistance.

While working with the Drag-N-Fly, we could both see things were headed in the right direction in a big way.

When she was ready to make real swings with a ball and club, we put on the Tour Tempo tones – first 24/8 and then the 21/7 to allow her to move slightly faster “without thinking about it.”

Here are her before and after numbers:

Clubhead Speed:
Before: 93
After: 100  (LPGA average is 96)

Ball Speed:
Before: 135
After: 145 (LPGA average is 143)

Carry Distance:
Before: 200 yards
After: 230 yards (LPGA average is 223)

Yes, she gained 7mph of swing speed, 10 mph of ball speed and (gulp) 30 yards of carry...in one session.

One reason we were successful is because we didn't come at this willy-nilly.

Instead, we worked through my standard Speed/Distance Progression in which we focus only on one to two of the following parameters at a time, and in this order:

1.    Increase Clubhead Speed (she did that quickly)
2.    Increase Ball Speed (also came fairly quickly)
3.    Increase Carry (came right after ball speed)
4.    Dial in Launch and Spin (she can still improve)
5.    Dial in Path / Angle of Attack / Accuracy (these all go together)

My favorite part of the whole thing was...her attitude!

Jillian had positivity, enthusiasm, non-judgmentalism, and (with me) a bit of curiosity (because everything we did was slightly "different").

I'll cover this in a separate post because it's often overlooked...but hugely important for making real improvement.
